Archeologists from the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities have discovered a well when they were looking for the west wall of the original Jamestown fort.  The well appears to be the original 1607 well, which was probably located near the center of the fort.

William Kelso, director of archeology for the Association, is quoted in a copyrighted Virginia Gazette article by Christie Phillips as stating that

"The well wouldn't have been outside the wall.  That makes no sense.  It would have been centralized in the fort so that everyone had equal access to it.  So if the wall isn't there and the well is, it's possible that's the center of the structure, which would double the size of the fort."
